CTP insurance is mandatory in every state and territory in Australia. So, if you own a car in Queensland, there’s no getting around it – you won’t be able to register or renew your car’s registration without it.
What does CTP insurance cover in Queensland?
Included as part of your vehicle registration payment, CTP is a motor vehicle insurance scheme that indemnifies you from financial liability should you (or another driver of your car) injure someone while driving your car or other insured vehicle. This includes:
Passengers in your car.
Other drivers and their passengers.
Motorcyclists and their passengers.
Pedestrians.
Cyclists.
Unlike other types of insurance, CTP provides unlimited cover. Benefits to third parties can include ambulance and hospital costs, medical treatment, rehabilitation, loss of income and long-term after-care.
Some policies may also provide at-fault driver protection under certain conditions. Be sure to read over the terms and conditions of your policy for specific details.
Every state and territory does CTP a little differently, and Queensland is no exception. While many states automatically include CTP cover as part of your car’s registration, Queensland drivers are free to choose their own CTP insurance provider at registration time.
In Queensland, the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) sets the range for CTP prices, so the cost of different policies will fall somewhere within these parameters. Simply compare your options, then nominate your preferred provider on your registration form or renewal notice, pay your fees, and you’re good to go.
Alternatively, you can nominate your preferred CTP provider on the Queensland Government website before your renewal is due. Bear in mind that you will not be able to change your CTP insurance details if your registration has expired.
Is CTP insurance all I need?
CTP insurance is the most basic level of cover, and offers financial protection against injuries to third parties only.
It doesn’t pay for damage to your vehicle or other people’s vehicles or property if you cause an accident. Nor does it cover your vehicle against fire, theft or vandalism, or repairs to your vehicle if you’re involved in an accident with an uninsured driver, even if it’s not your fault. This is why you really should consider additional car insurance.
